What is a valid ISBN number?

A ISBN number is a unique identifier assigned to a book by the publisher.

ISBN numbers are 13 digits long and have 5 parts:

• Prefix - 3 digits representing the GS1 standard. For 10-digit ISBN numbers generated before 2007, the GS1 prefix is not specified.
• Registration (Group) - 1 to 5 digits representing a language, a country or a territory.
• Registrant (Publisher) 1 to 7 digits representing a publisher.
• Publication - 1 to 7 digits representing a specific book.
• Checksum - 1 digit calculated using a checksum algorithm.
