Typographical Conventions
This book uses the following typographical conventions:
Bold Bold text indicates function names and the elements of the
functions that are to be typed in literally.
Italics
Italic
text indicates variable names and book names.
Helvetica
The
Helvetica
font is used for examples and statements
that are to be typed in literally.
[ ] Square brackets enclose optional parameters.
{ } Curly brackets indicate that one of the enclosed values
must be assigned to the current parameter.
... In a line of syntax, three dots indicate that more items of
the same format may be included. In a program example,
three dots are used to indicate lines of a program that have
been intentionally omitted.
| A vertical bar indicates that either of the two options
separated by the bar should be selected.
